This week on Kill the Head I had a special in-studio guest: Soft Opening’s Jamie Hepler. In addition to spotlighting his band’s jams, as well as fielding a few questions tossed from yours truly, Hepler played some of his favorite hard-psych hypnotism.
Soft Opening, for the uninitiated, is the best underground-rock band in Asheville (in my humble opinion, obviously). I suppose one can say they fall somewhere between vintage stoner-rock/doom and all this post-rock metal that’s so popular these days. At the same time, it’s a description that doesn’t address what makes the group vital and distinctive. Soft Opening have an authentically cracked, wasted-at-dawn vibe that reminds me of early 1990s indie-rock and lo-fi, the harder-edged stuff like Bitch Magnet and even some of Eric Gaffney’s total freak-outs on Sebadoh’s early records. For my pal Greg, Soft Opening recalls the Country Teasers — had Ben Wallers grown up listening to Sabbath and Loop, not The Fall.

This week’s installment of Kill the Head spotlighted the music of Moritz von Oswald and his myriad projects/labels: The Moritz von Oswald Trio, Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound, Basic Replay, 3MB, 2MB, Rounds One to Five, Maurizio, Palais Schaumburg and more. Having revolutionized a sonic strategy that’s best described as dubby minimalism, Oswald is a true pioneer whose influence can be felt in techno, house, experimental electronics, noise and underground rock.

This week Kill the Head spotlighted the music of Sightings, the most important and vital underground art-rock band of the last decade. The show went really well, I think. A big thank you to guitarist Mark Morgan, whom I interviewed via phone.

This week Kill the Head spotlighted harsh-noise musician Pat Yankee. In addition to his Paranoid Time project, Yankee runs two labels highly respected in the underground: SNSE and Gaping Hole. I was very lucky to have the man himself in the studio. Between spinning a ton of killer jams and gabbing about his music and labels, we covered a lot of ground in just two hours. A great show all around. Thanks, Pat!
