The Dowsers has just published my post exploring what may be my favorite era of music from any band ever: The Beach Boys’ stretch from Smiley Smile (1967) through Holland (1973). Commercially speaking, it’s a low point for the group, yet in terms of creativity they were never more ambitious and diverse. In addition to psych-pop and earthy blue-eyed soul, they explored electronic rock, lo-fi weirdness, proto-ambient pop and so much more. Check it out here.
